You might be sneaking in one last beach holiday to celebrate the end of winter or maybe you’re already looking ahead to summer vacations. Either way, I always found it tough to get a good makeup routine going in a super hot or tropical climate.
I’ve come up with some great hot makeup tips to make you look like a beach goddess during your vacation and to stop the makeup from melting off your face. Check out the step-by-step guide or watch the video below.
1. SPF Foundation + Lightweight Moisturizer
Starting off these hot makeup tips is to keep the products easy breezy. You’ll want to skip the heavy creams during your vacation, as hotter climates already add extra moisture to your face. Choose instead a lightweight serum. The Caudalie VinoSource Serum absorbs quickly into your skin leaving a silky finish. Be sure to nourish your under-eye area with a good eye gel. This area can get particularly dried out after spending time in the sun.
Finding a great tinted moisturizer with SPF is essential to your vacation beauty routine. You can save time getting ready and space in your suitcase by using a dual-purpose product, instead of packing a sunscreen and a foundation for your trip.
I loved this tinted moisturizer by tarte because it felt like I wasn’t wearing foundation at all AND it contains non-chemical sunscreen ingredients. It’s lightweight and oil-free so my face didn’t look greasy after a day on the beach.
I finished of my foundation routine with Becca corrector, Nars concealer, and set with Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder for coverage that lasted all day.

- Amore Pacific Eye Treatment Gel

2. Long-Lasting Eyeshadow
The secret to keeping your eyeshadow on point after a day in the sun is to start with an eyeshadow primer.
I started off my beach goddess eyeshadow look with the Eye Shadow Primer Potion by Urban Decay. It was incredible. It kept my eyeshadow and liner in place for over 14 hours.
I then applied a simple bronzed, beachy makeup look using the Tartelette In Bloom Clay Eyeshadow Palette by tarte. Scroll down below for a step-by-step guide for tips on how to get this eyeshadow look or watch the Hot Makeup Tips video tutorial.
- Apply Smarty Pants with a crease brush to the outer edges of the crease.
- Using a flat brush, apply Firecracker to outer edges of the lid.
- Apply Funny Girl to centre of the lid using a small flat brush.
- Sweep Smarty Pants along lower lash line using a crease blending brush.
- Line the lower lash line with Firecracker using a smudging brush, stopping at the centre of the eye.
3. Sweat-Proof Eyeliner and Mascara
Probably one of the most frequent hot makeup tips I get asked is how to prevent your eyeliner and mascara from smudging and running down your face when sweat and sun are a factor during your vacation. It’s all about choosing products with a foolproof formula.
Benefit Cosmetic’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner is perfect for hot destinations because once applied to stays in place. The Lifted Sweat-Proof mascara designed by tarte is another great product to give you incredible volume without any smudging.
4. Beach Cheat Makeup
If you’re very fair like I am, it may take a few days for your tan to kick in. Rather than haunting the beaches like some pasty ghost, I add a bit of bronzer to the hollows of my cheeks, temples, chin and side of my nose to warm up my skin tone.
I love the Hoola matte bronzer by Benefit Cosmetics because it gives a natural finish and can double as a contour. I apply it with a buffing brush to make my faux tan look even more natural.
5. Beach Glow
Give yourself a gorgeous glow with the Tarteist PRO Glow Highlight and Contour Palette and the Too Faced shimmering peach blush in Sparkling Bellini.
I used a fan brush to sweep Stunner from the palette along my cheekbones and under my brows. I also applied some highlight in the inner corners of my eyes using a smudging brush to brighten my eyes.

6. Blot Party
Set your beach look with a blotting powder. Tarte makes the Blot Party kit which comes with blotting papers and powder in a cute little clutch.
I keep the blotting papers on hand to absorb excess shine and oil throughout the day.

7. Contrast Lipstick
Since I used a lot of bronze and peach tones in this makeup look, I thought it would be fun to go for a really high-contrast colour on the lips. I tried on this gorgeous iridescent purple shade, called Heartbreaker from the Sephora Collection. It looks spectacular on the lips! One of my friends commented that it looks holographic because of the blue undertones in the lipstick.
